There are a lot of perks to being a contractor. One of the main ones is the ability to choose your own WorkStyle. But what is your WorkStyle and how can you make the most of it as a contractor?

For full time employees, how they work is pretty much dictated by their employer. They know when they start work, when they finish, how many days holiday they can take and therefore how they can fit their personal life around this. For contractors, the lines are a little more blurred; you’re likely to set your own working hours, have no set holiday entitlement and chances are you might even work from home. That’s where WorkStyle comes in.

What is WorkStyle?

WorkStyle directly relates to your unique way of working as a contractor and how this fits into your work and life balance. Perhaps you choose to work 40 hours per week Monday-Friday, maybe you work one week on and one week off, or you work 80 hour weeks for half of the year followed by the rest of the year off. One of the main perks of contracting is that the choice is entirely yours and your WorkStyle is unique to you.

Making your WorkStyle work

The great thing about WorkStyle is that it’s personal to you, there’s no right or wrong and no one can dictate it to you. What’s even better is that you can give one WorkStyle a try and if it doesn’t work out for you, you can change it up as you see fit. That being said, there are a couple of things to bear in mind when it comes to choosing your WorkStyle:

You know yourself and when you work best. If you’re more of a night owl when it comes to productivity, trial working that in to your WorkStyle – if you want to work from 8pm until 3am there’s no one to stop you. Likewise, if you were a fan of working the more traditional 9am-5pm it may make sense for you to carry that on.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that the time may come where you’re working on a contract where contact time with the business you’re working with is necessary. It’s likely that the businesses you work with will follow the traditional 9am-5pm work day set up, so you may need to alter your WorkStyle to react to the needs of your contract.
