The online retail giant started life in the garage of Princeton graduate Jeff Bezos after he discovered that online retailers were exempt from tax. He left his day job to begin working for himself and pioneered the platform, making his first sales two years later.

The business (which began with selling books) enjoyed revenues of over $177 billion in 2017.


The search engine which could give Google a run for its money was pioneered by a single contractor, Gabriel Weinberg. DuckDuckGo was born from a desire for a search engine which offers users the privacy some of its predecessors don’t.

With their unique outlook, the company continues to grow year on year in a crowded market and in July 2018, DuckDuckGo reported an average of 23,500 searches per day.


The cloud-based task manager was conceived by programmer Amir Salihefendic. Todoist began as a personal tool, but quickly became adopted by users worldwide. As of 2018, the platform has over 10 million users and integrates with programmes like Apple and Google.

Markus Frind founded the popular dating site back in 2003 in his Vancouver apartment. As the first free online platform of its type, the conception saw its creator skyrocket to success. In 2015, the company recorded that it had broken 100 million users.
